This is a phenomenal early 1930s black silk velvet opera coat. The star of this coat is its enormous shawl collar in creamy ivory ermine, which sweeps over the shoulders and plunges to a deep V at the chest. The pelts are pieced in an art deco pattern at the back. Ermine was a hallmark of luxury and status of high-end evening wear in the 1920s and 30s. The coat is fully lined in black silk satin. It has an internal belt that buttons the waistline. The coat has two off center self covered buttons at the waist. The sleeves are gathered at the shoulders and cuff. They are full and dramatic. This is the best black silk velvet opera coat I’ve ever seen. This coat is in excellent condition especially for being nearly 100 years old. I feel this is best suited for a small. My dress form is an extra small for reference. The shop label is sewn upside down. There are different opinions on why some vintage pieces have this.
