1967 Documented beaded butterfly evening gown
Phenomenal beaded evening gown by James Galanos. From spring 1967. Constructed from a textured cream silk, the gown is lavishly hand beaded with a dense array of glass beads and paste gems in shades of red, green, amethyst, and crystal. The intricate beadwork forms floral and geometric motifs that culminate in a jeweled butterfly at the center front and matching embellishment at one cuff. Fully lined in a layer of silk chiffon and hand set back zipper. This piece exemplifies Galanos’s couture level craftsmanship during the 1960s. The mixture of a minimalist silhouette with an extraordinary level of embellishment. The same identical example was held in the collection of the Museum at FIT. Both known examples of this design are unlabeled, yet unmistakably Galanos in technique, materials, and execution. Along with many existing images of him holding this gown in his salon. This gown and its captivating beading is in excellent condition. One small extremely faint spot at the side hip and one spot at the bottom of the skirt, 6” from the hem. One very small pink/red spot at inner back neckline.
